PC Backup

If you are familiar with Mac’s, you know about Time Machine and how awesome of a backup program that is. I recently ran across Rebit, which is basically the same type of program except that it’s for Windows (and it doesn’t come with your computer). What it does is backup any files you’ve changed, checking periodically throughout the day. In case of a crash, you can quickly and easily recover your entire PC, or if you accidentally delete a file, or saved over something important, you can go back and recover from a previously backed up file.
With Rebit, you can buy one of their pre-loaded external hard drives, but you can also just buy the software ($50) and then use any external hard drive you want. My recommendation would be to buy your own externa hard drive (you can get a 1TB external for $100 now – http://tinyurl.com/677sdd).
Important Note: The downfall of Windows is that, and this applies to ANY backup program, if your entire computer goes to the pooper and you have to buy a new computer, you will not be able to do a full system restore and have all your programs back. This is because Windows detects if it is on different hardware, and will freak out and attempt to murder you in your sleep. You can only transfer files (pictures, documents, music, etc) to a new computer. You will have to manually reinstall all your applications.
Other Important Note: Besides buying an external hard drive, none of the above applies to Mac’s (it already comes with the backup software). If your Mac dies, you can use your backup to do a full restore to another Mac with only a couple clicks of the mouse and a couple of hours of not wasting your life.
Anyways, if I were you, I would seriously consider investing some $$$ in this software. Very few people take backing up seriously, but a LOT of people get concussions from banging their head against the wall after they lose their data and don’t have a backup. Choose to be one of the few. Every geek in this world will thank you.
