How To: Convert DVDs to iPod Format

Prep Work

This may seem like a lot to download and install, but the only program you’ll actually have to use is Handbrake. DVD43 and VLC run in the background.

  1. Download/install Handbrake
  2. Download/install DVD43 (this is only if you are using Windows)
  3. Download/install VLC

Ready to Rip

  1. Insert DVD into computer
  2. Open Handbrake
  3. Click Source
  4. Choose your DVD drive
  5. Wait for it to scan the DVD
It will automatically find the appropriate information and choose the title and chapters for you
  6. On the right sidebar (Presets), click Apple
  7. Choose iPod or iPhone/iPod Touch depending on what you have
  8. Click the Browse button next to Destination and choose where to save the file
  9. Click the green Start button at the top
  10. Wait until it’s finished (can take a couple hours)

You can also do the same steps as above for converting ANY file to iPod format by choosing to browse for a file when you click Source, rather than selecting your DVD drive. You can convert home videos, downloaded TV shows, etc.

This is also a great way to backup your personal (and legal) DVD collection to your computer. Just choose a different preset (I recommend choosing Film from the High Quality presets)
